Request Transfer Credit For Coursework Completed Abroad

Main content start

Transfer Credit Evaluation

The Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) determines the amount of transfer credit that undergraduates can apply toward graduation requirements for coursework completed abroad during their undergraduate studies at Stanford. If you are requesting an evaluation of transfer credit completed prior to starting your studies at Stanford or for coursework completed in the U.S. during your undergraduate studies at Stanford, please refer to the Registrar’s Office guidance on requesting transfer credit evaluation.

Stanford University awards a maximum of 45 quarter units of transfer, Advanced Placement (AP), and other external credit. Please review the International/Abroad Coursework page from the Registrar’s Office.

Undergraduates who have taken courses from non-Stanford study abroad programs and want to apply them toward their Stanford bachelor’s degree should carefully review  Stanford University’s transfer credit policies. Academic work completed at another institution can be considered for credit if all of the Stanford University transfer credit policy conditions are met. It is the student’s responsibility to understand these transfer credit policies established by the Registrar’s Office.

The Bing Overseas Studies Program determines which classes are transferable; BOSP will contact you if your assistance is required with the transfer credit evaluation process. The evaluation process, in general, can take up to two months from the receipt of a complete application.

A complete application includes:

  1. completed transfer credit request form
  2. course syllabi
  3. official transcript mailed directly to BOSP from the institution

In some cases, the evaluation process may take longer depending on the particular application. Students should plan to submit complete applications at least two months prior to the date by which they need to know the evaluation result. Transfer credit requests will be reviewed in order of receipt.

Prematriculation Credit Evaluation

If you wish to transfer credit for courses taken prior to enrolling at Stanford University, please make the request at the Office of the University Registrar. More information can be found on the Registrar's Office website.

Major Requirements

The transfer work must be accepted for general University credit through the Bing Overseas Studies Program in order to be considered by your department. You must check with your major department about meeting major requirements through transfer work.

Translation Services

Students are encouraged to purchase a third-party, course-by-course international transcript translation and evaluation service, as most of these services include all of the above-mentioned information. Some examples of these services are:

Please note that all documentation must be in the English language (or all documentation must have a certified English translation). BOSP will determine which classes are transferable and will contact you if your assistance is required with the transfer credit process, and notify you of the result via email. You may be requested to supply additional information.

Instructions:

  1. Review the University’s transfer credit policies.
  2. Complete the Request for Non-Stanford Study Abroad Transfer Credit Evaluation Form to request transfer credit evaluation. If more than one institution was attended, use a separate form for each.
  3. Match your transfer course(s) with what you believe to be an equivalent Stanford course or courses.
  4. Attach a course syllabus for each transfer course. Syllabi must be in English.
  5. Request that an official transcript from each host institution be mailed directly to the Bing Overseas Studies Program by the host institution once you have completed your transfer work and grades have been posted. Transcripts should be mailed to:

Bing Overseas Studies Program
Stanford University
Sweet Hall, Ground Floor
590 Escondido Mall
Stanford CA 94305-3089

Processing time varies, but the transfer credit for the approved courses will appear on both your Stanford unofficial and official transcripts generally within two months AFTER BOSP has received your official transcript, provided that the courses have been completed successfully and your documents are in order. Note that transfer credit may be removed from your record if subsequent Stanford coursework duplicates transfer credit course content.
