Embark on an immersive journey through Italy's rich and varied landscape with this comprehensive course designed to explore the essence of Italian society and politics, as well as its artistic heritage. Starting with an analytical overview of contemporary Italy, students will gain key insights into its economics, education, and demographics, understanding the current state of the nation through data-driven analysis. The course will then trace the evolution of Italian identity through a historical lens, exploring significant events and periods that have shaped modern Italy, and providing context for its present-day culture and societal norms. It will also include a critical examination of Italy's political environment and its role within the European Union. The many challenges and opportunities facing the country today, including the complex trends of immigration and emigration, will be discussed. Additionally, onsite classes and visits in Florence will enable students to experience firsthand different facets of Italianità (or Italian-ness), from cultural pluralism to religious diversity. The course will also focus on Italian art, exploring masterpieces and lesser-known works that have cemented Italy's reputation as a global center of artistic excellence. As temporary citizens of Italy, you will greatly benefit from this enlightening exploration of the country and gain a comprehensive understanding of its society, politics, and cultural heritage through a blend of analytical rigor and experiential learning.
