OSPOXFRD 93: Collecting the World: With particular attention to transcultural objects during the period of European expansion (Way: A-II, SI)

This course will address medieval through nineteenth century transcultural engagements with precious and informative objects in Oxfordshire and London collections, focusing on socio-historical and institutional developments during the era of European expansion, and in particular British engagements overseas. At issue are the purposes of British collecting, ordering and displays of world objects and information. Examining material and intellectual culture in and around Oxfordshire and briefly in London, the course will explore academic engagements with global trends in the arts, sciences and technology.
