Planning & Resources

Welcome, BOSP Participants!
As you prepare for your study away experience through the Bing Overseas Studies Program, this page is your central hub for essential information. From securing your passport and visa to understanding academic registration, health and safety, student policies, and how to vote while abroad, each section below is designed to guide you step-by-step. Whether you're traveling for a quarter or participating in a Global Seminar, thoughtful preparation is key to a successful and enriching time away. Be sure to explore the resources for parents and family, travel guidelines, and participation concerns as you get ready for your journey away.

Passports and Visas

You are solely responsible for getting your passport and visa, if needed. Every BOSP participant must have a signed passport valid for at least 6 months after the return date from the overseas program.

Extensions and Withdrawals

BOSP allows extensions for programs overseas to a second or third quarter, depending on the program and quarter. Priority is given to extension requests made before the first application round.

Health and Safety

Students on international programs should know that views on medical conditions, disabilities, and mental health differ by culture and country laws. BOSP staff understand Stanford's safety policies and monitor local conditions.

Student Policies

While on an Overseas Studies Program, you are still a Stanford student and have access to the same resources as those on campus. Stanford policies, like the Honor Code and Fundamental Standard, still apply.

Travel Guidelines

Students must book and pay for their own flights to and from the BOSP program location. For questions about preparing for your program abroad, email your Quarter Length Program Advisor, Program Manager, or the Student Ambassadors for your program.

Participation Concerns

We recognize that some students may find studying away challenging for various reasons. We are dedicated to helping overcome these obstacles.

Parents and Family

BOSP staff cannot discuss individual student issues with parents due to FERPA. Please encourage your student to communicate with staff regarding your questions.
